Mind Spark #17 - Live in the Moment: Extraordinary in the Ordinary

This morning, I went to church with my older daughter Emma. The message was about Extraordinary Moments. The pastor shared something that stayed with me: Ordinary moments can become extraordinary if we are fully present, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually, and available for what God is preparing in the moment.

"God has something for you in this moment. You matter, right here, right now."

That one sentence echoed in my heart.

Most of the time at work and in life, our minds are busy jumping to what’s next:

The next item on the to-do list.

The next goal, project, or vacation.

The list can keep going..

But we forget that God works in the “now.”

Not just in the significant, dramatic events of life, but in the small and simple parts of our daily routine.

God shapes us in the ordinary:

– a quiet conversation with a friend

– a meal shared with family

– a simple walk

– a laugh with a child

– even a challenging conversation with a teenager that helps he/she grow

Today reminded me: I don’t need to chase some perfect moment to feel fulfilled.

I need to show up fully, open my heart, slow down, and be aware that each moment, no matter how small, holds meaning.

People often say we should live in the moment, but after this morning’s worship, I feel that truth more deeply. Living in the moment isn’t just about enjoying life; it’s about trusting that God is here, in this very moment, shaping us with love and purpose.

So today, I’m choosing to notice and cherish the “ordinary” moments:

– Dinner with my family.

A sweaty pickleball game with my older son, with my younger son as ball boy.

A fun visit to the Museum of Life and Science with my younger daughter.

– A quiet moment writing this post before bed.

These are not small things. They are where life and God’s presence truly happen.
